About

New American Press is an independent literary publisher committed to bringing readers the best in contemporary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and translations from across the United States and around the world. We believe that books have the potential to offer readers new and compelling visions of being in the world, and we’re committed to bringing those visions to life with careful attention to each book’s design, production, and distribution.

We publish between three and five full-length books each year, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and translated works. Annually, we award a New American Fiction Prize and a New American Poetry Prize, each for a full-length book that we publish and tell all our friends about. You can find out more at our contest page and our previous winners page.

We also seek to support and spotlight the flourishing crop of Midwestern writers who consistently produce work that is innovative, engaging, finely crafted, and strong in voice. To that end, New American Press releases a new anthology of midwestern writing each year: Check out our New from the Midwest anthology series.

Our literary journal, MAYDAY Magazine, presents new writing and visual art to a growing community of international readers. Past issues have featured poetry, fiction, translations, and commentary by such writers as Alex Cigale, Paul Crenshaw, Rana Dasgupta, Kathy Fagen, Annie Finch, Alan Heathcock, Christopher Higgs, T. R. Hummer, Mary Kasimor, Daniil Kharms, David Kirby, Maya Kóvskaya, Abdellatif Laâbi, Craig Nova, Daniele Pantano, David R. Slavitt, Mark Smith-Soto, Robert Walser, and Jillian Weise, as well as paintings, photography, and other visual art by José Ð Almeida, Han Bing, Aleksandra Bogdanova, Barbara Hamby, and Sheng Qi, among others. Enjoy the current issue, and don’t forget to check out the submission guidelines.
